If you are looking for help, ideas, resources, and guidance on what to do to create terror in your Home Haunt, then let the kind Doctor prescribe his favorite tidbits. His 42 years of Haunt experience may provide the perfect therapy! This class will also provide suggestions about creating props and decorations for your creepy abode. Resources, support and networking sites dedicated to Halloween enthusiasts and Home Haunters will be shared. Dr. TerrorEyes will help attendees find inspiration and tools to transform their home into a terror-ific Home Haunt worthy of the talk of the neighborhood. Additionally, course attendees will also be eligible for his several door prize drawings.

Conjuring Your Own Pepper’s Ghost

Instructor: Randy Powell

Location: Classroom B

This presentation will cover the historical origin of the Pepper’s Ghost illusion, the two main variations in use, multiple “haunt” applications of the illusion, dissections of classic and other examples (including Disney’s Haunted Mansion Ballroom), materials and lower cost options, illusion set-up variables, plus tips, tricks and other details. Topics will be illustrated and explained using diagrams, photos, video clips, and a 1/12th scale physical model and video of Randy’s introductory “Foyer Ghost Hostess” scene for Monster Manor, which featured a live actress, interacting with haunt patrons. Time for questions will be available at the end of the presentation.

Scare Tools: How to Make Slider Gloves

Every slider knows the importance of proper equipment when it comes to this epic scare tactic. The quality and build of your sliding gloves can make or break your sliding experience. In this workshop, Casey walks you through the process of building your perfect set of gloves, with explanations of various hardware, tools, gloves, and application methods. You will see multiple examples of tried-and-true glove builds, each developed with specific scare and slide styles in mind. This will be a hands-on experience where you have the chance to build a set of gloves, which will be raffled off at the end of the class!

Dry Ice Ideas for Halloween Science Fun

Dry Ice has traditional been used to help bring that creepy, spooky feeling to your party or haunted house. In this workshop learn some unique ways to further the use of dry ice to create more effects for your Halloween event. You will learn to make a Smoking Fog Face Jack-O-Lantern, Eerie Sounds, Ghost Bubbles, and other fun techniques using dry ice. (*Limit to 20 attendees)

Haunting with Timers, Triggers, and Controllers

Are you curious how those Home Haunts, Yard Displays and Pro Haunted Attractions make some of their things work or come to life? In this class I will introduce you to the various ways Haunts and Yard Displays are able to magically make things happen without anyone around. This class will review some of the popular controllers (also called “button bangers” ) and review commonly used triggers and timers in the Haunted Attraction business. At the conclusion of the presentation I will live demo how to make a simple motion sensor trigger outlet. Plus there will be a hands-on demo display of various items to look at and try out for yourself at the close of the class.

Façade Design: Designing a Spooktacular Face for Your Haunt

Instructor: Leonard Pickel

First impressions are powerful and very important in creating the atmosphere and setting. For a Haunted Attraction this includes the entry area and façade (fake front) of the attraction. With one glance the patrons should know what kind of structure they are about to enter, the approximate time period and what may be in store for them within. A dramatic, realistic looking façade can greatly enhance the overall haunt experience and will increase ticket sales! Learn the steps in designing a spooky façade for your attraction from 30 year industry veteran Leonard Pickel, known for his “spooktacular” Haunted Architecture, and pick up some tricks and tips about how you can make the façade on your attraction look more evil and foreboding.

Watch and listen as Halloween zealot Dr. Bill Ramsay (a.k.a.: Dr. TerrorEyes) provides you with the tips, techniques, ideas, and effects you need to make your living-dead actor look like he/she just clawed themselves out from six feet beneath a heavy granite headstone. You will learn the shortcuts to create a distressed outfit in just 10 minutes! Let the Doctor’s 42 years of Haunt experience provide you with the insight and ideas to create truly gruesome clothing. You will see samples of techniques to age, decay, distress, bloody-up, and grubby-up your squalid costume’s clothing. You’ll get details, an up-close look and a course handout that will inspire you. To add to the fun, course attendees are also eligible for several door prize drawings throughout presentation.

Haunters are always looking for ways to increase the scare factor of their attractions, but there are only so many giant animatronics that the budget can handle. In this session, industry veteran Leonard Pickel with delve deep into the psyche of the human brain and share psychological tips and tricks that he uses to increase the scare factor of the over 200 fright attractions he has designed for clients over his 40 year history of scaring people. This class will cover how to use the patrons imagination against them to increase the effectiveness of existing scares and use psychology to create new scares in your attraction.

Haunt Layout Design Using SketchUp

Instructor: Jason Thompson, The Haunt Store

Location: Classroom A

Are you looking for a quick way to quickly visualize your haunt or yard display layout? Whether or not you’re starting a brand-new haunted attraction, home haunt, yard display, or just wanting to change up your current layout and explore various layouts designs, then Google’s SketchUp application for Mac & Windows is the place to start. In this class, Jay will go over some basic fundamental SketchUp instructions and show you how to use SketchUp for your haunt wall layout. He will show you in real time how to build a small haunted walk-through with standard wall flats, that you can then look at in a 3D world once completed.

Tip: Bring your laptop along with you to follow along and be sure to download Google SketchUp prior to the class to follow along. Jay will pass around a USB with a starter Haunt Wall Kit that you will need to use for this class.

In immersive attractions, the environment is more than just a collection of set pieces – it’s a full-fledged character of its own! Whether you’re developing your own immersive theater production or haunt, or you’re just a fan, learn how to create physical environments that audiences will remember.

Jeff Leinenveber and Jarrett Lantz, Co-Creative Directors of Scout Expedition Co., share lessons from their show “The Nest,” and previous work in themed entertainment and immersive theater. Learn about the design process, from research, to writing, to concept art, to production. They’ll also discuss how to convey story through physical objects, use the design of a space to affect audience psychology, balance creative goals with operational requirements, and flip design challenges into storytelling opportunities.
